Boating in the Greater Boston Area:

  • All types of boats are allowed on the Charles River, Boston Harbor, Dorchester inner and outer Bays, and Neponset River
  • The Public Passenger Ferry takes 30 minutes to travel to the various Boston Harbor Islands
  • Sailboats can be rented from one of the boathouses or docks along the Charles
  • Permits for public landing and float docks can be purchased from the Boston Harbormaster by the public on the Christopher Columbus Waterfront Park (Commercial Street, Boston Harbor)
  • Paid reservations can be made for docking at Spectacle Island Marina (call 857-452-7221)
  • Limited docking is available on Georges Island on a first-come, first-served basis
  • For access to Lovells, Peddocks, Grape, and Bumpkin Islands, you may drop off your guests at the island docks and moor or anchor offshore (dinghies are available)
